How to play Ultimate Texas Hold’em
The rules take five minutes to learn. The decisions take a little longer to master — that is what the rest of this guide is for.
Short answer
You post equal Ante and Blind bets (and optionally a Trips side bet). You then get one chance to make a Play bet: 4x your ante pre-flop, 2x after the flop, or 1x after the river — the earlier you raise, the more you can bet. You never fold except on the river. The dealer needs at least a pair to “qualify”; the best five-card hand wins.
The four bets
- Ante and Blind — posted before the deal, always equal.
- Play — your one raise. 4x the ante pre-flop, 2x after the flop, 1x after the river. You make it once.
- Trips — an optional side bet on your own final five-card hand, paid regardless of the dealer. See Trips & Blind.
The three decision points
- Pre-flop (two hole cards): raise 4x or check.
- Flop (three community cards, only if you checked): raise 2x or check.
- River (all five community cards, only if you checked twice): bet 1x or fold.
Because a check is free, checking keeps your options open — but every time you check with a raising hand you leave value on the table, because your maximum bet shrinks from 4x to 2x to 1x.
Showdown and dealer qualifying
The dealer needs a pair or better to qualify. If the dealer does not qualify, the Ante pushes (returned) and only the Play and Blind are in action. The Blind pays a bonus scale only when you win with a straight or better — you make a qualifying Blind hand about 10.44% of the time (exact). Ties push.
Once you know the flow, the whole game reduces to three yes/no raise decisions. The strategy chart answers all three.
Common questions
What does the dealer need to qualify?
A pair or better. If the dealer misses, your Ante is returned rather than paid, which is a small but real break for the player — it is one reason optimal play raises so aggressively.
Can I raise more than once?
No. The Play bet is a single decision. The only choice is when to make it, and earlier is better because the multiple is larger.
Is the Blind bet optional?
No — the Blind is mandatory and equal to the Ante. Only Trips is optional. The Blind pays a bonus for a straight or better when you win.
